You finally hit pity, popped the wish animation, watched that gold streak across the screen, and got the standard banner Diluc again. Welcome to Genshin Impact in 2026. Between Natlan's pyrotechnic powerhouses, Fontaine's still-dominant hydro lineup, and the constant pressure of saving Primogems for the next limited rerun, picking who's actually worth pulling has never been more confusing.
I've been crunching the 5.x patch numbers across Spiral Abyss clears, Imaginarium Theater runs, and the new Stygian Onslaught endgame mode. The tier list below reflects what's actually carrying teams to 36-star clears right now, not what was meta when Sumeru launched. Let's get into it.
The State of Genshin Impact in 2026
Natlan changed everything. The Pyro region introduced Nightsoul, a regional resource that gives Natlan characters massive stat scaling and synergy when teamed up. That sounds bad for older characters on paper, but most of the existing top-tier units (Furina, Neuvillette, Kazuha, Bennett, Xilonen) still slot into Natlan teams perfectly.
The 5.x meta rewards three things: Hyperbloom-style reaction spam from Dendro cores, vaporize/melt nuke compositions led by hydro/cryo carriers, and the new Pyro plunge archetype built around Mavuika and Xilonen. If your DPS doesn't have either insane personal multipliers, a Nightsoul partner, or a top-tier reaction, they're slipping down the rankings.
HoYoverse also tightened the screws on enrage timers in Spiral Abyss. Burst windows matter more, rotations need to be tighter, and survival options like Furina's healing-into-damage gimmick are essentially required against the new bosses. Solo carries are dead. Team chemistry is everything.
Here's how I'm ranking: assuming C0R1 weapons, decent (not god-tier) artifacts, and the standard Spiral Abyss / Imaginarium Theater context. If a character ramps massively at C2+ but is mid at C0, that gets noted but doesn't elevate them above C0 monsters.
S+ Tier: The Meta Definers
These are the characters that bend Spiral Abyss in your favor before the run even starts. Pulling for these will pay off across multiple patches.
Neuvillette remains the king of single-target hydro damage. His Charged Attack does insane damage even at C0, scales with HP through Furina synergy, and applies hydro fast enough to drive any reaction team. He clears every Abyss chamber and is one of the most patch-proof units in the game.
Furina is the GOAT support unit. Her Fanfare scaling boosts your entire team's damage by absurd amounts, and her healing tied to her burst makes her the cleanest survival button HoYoverse has ever printed. If you have Furina, every team gets better.
Arlecchino is the Pyro nuker that finally challenged Hu Tao's throne. C0 Arle with Crimson Moon's Semblance does video-game-breaking single-target damage. Her self-sustain solves the Pyro DPS healing problem, and her vaporize teams with Furina/Xilonen are top-tier in every Abyss floor.
Mavuika is the most flexible Pyro carrier in the game. She can plunge with Xilonen, drive Nightsoul teams, fit into vape comps, and hit like a truck while doing it. Her Nightsoul mechanic lets her ult instantly under the right conditions, which is unmatched burst speed.
Citlali is the Cryo support Genshin didn't know it needed. Massive Cryo application, massive shred, massive Pyro/Hydro damage amp via her A4. She basically replaces Kazuha for melt and freeze teams and she's a 5-star. Pull her if you can.
Xilonen quietly carries 90% of Pyro plunge teams. The defense shred is busted, the Nightsoul battery is huge, and her healing is sneaky-good. She's the reason Mavuika feels broken.
S Tier: Powerhouse Mains and Top Supports
Hu Tao is still elite. The Vape combo with Xingqiu/Yelan/Furina remains one of the highest-damage rotations in the game, and her phase-skipping speed is unmatched. C1 makes her even nastier.
Raiden Shogun got a second wind thanks to Hyperbloom and Aggravate teams getting strong artifact sets. Her energy battery role is mandatory in burst-hungry comps and her own damage is still respectable.
Nahida is the Dendro queen for any reaction team. Hyperbloom, Quicken, Burgeon, Spread — she enables all of them at C0 and her on-field flex is huge. Mandatory pull for new accounts.
Kazuha still holds the crown for VV-shred Anemo support, just barely. Citlali eats his lunch in some teams, but Kazuha's grouping plus elemental damage buff plus Sucrose-tier swirl is still S-tier infrastructure.
Yelan is Xingqiu's premium upgrade. Off-field Hydro, ramping damage buff, high personal damage. She slots into nearly every Hydro/Pyro vape team. Pull her for any non-Furina vape comp.
Xianyun is the only reason the entire Pyro plunge meta exists. C0 Xianyun + Xilonen + Bennett + carry plunger is one of the strongest archetypes in the game.
Skirk is the new Cryo carrier that fits perfectly into Citlali freeze teams. Her on-field damage and quick swap potential give freeze comps the carry they've been missing since Ayaka launch.
A Tier: Strong, Reliable, Slightly Conditional
These characters carry teams but require the right team comp or constellations to truly shine.
Alhaitham is still the strongest Quicken carrier. His on-field damage, Spread reactions, and self-sustain shielding make him an Abyss veteran. Citlali doesn't help him, but Nahida + Yae Miko still does work.
Wriothesley is the most underrated 5-star Hydro main DPS. His Melt setup with Citlali is genuinely top-tier, his self-heal is solid, and he punches way above what most tier lists give him.
Navia is the Geo nuker that proved Geo can do damage. With Xilonen and Furina, Navia melts bosses. Her counter mechanic feels great, even if her teams are slightly limited.
Chiori is the Geo support of choice for Navia and Arlecchino teams. She extends construct-based damage windows and gives Geo Resonance a reason to exist.
Kinich is a niche but powerful pick. His ranged Dendro/grappler gameplay shines in Hyperbloom variants, and his Nightsoul synergy makes him strong in Natlan teams.
Mualani got a quiet meta resurgence with the right Furina + Xilonen + Bennett comp. Her shark-surfing burst rotations are nasty in vape teams.
Bennett is the eternal A-tier 4-star MVP. He's basically Furina-lite for any non-Furina team and remains essential for half the rosters in the game.
Xingqiu / Xiangling are still the best 4-star DPS enablers. National team (Xiangling + Xingqiu + Bennett + Sucrose/Kazuha) is still a top-five team in the entire game and uses zero 5-stars.
Yae Miko is the off-field electro queen for Hyperbloom and Aggravate teams. Slightly outclassed by Raiden in pure energy economy but harder hitting personally.
B Tier: Solid Picks That Need Help
Ganyu still nukes well in Citlali freeze comps but is otherwise behind Skirk now. C1 is mandatory for serious play.
Zhongli remains the all-purpose universal shielder. He's not "meta" but he's never bad to bring.
Ayaka got powercrept by Skirk but is still a viable freeze DPS with Citlali and the right artifacts.
Cyno got buffed slightly with Aggravate teams and is a fine on-field Electro carrier, just not exceptional.
Itto is the king of Geo single-target. Mono-Geo with Chiori and Xilonen is genuinely strong, even if it's a niche comp.
Lyney is a solid Pyro DPS but suffers in vape teams against Arlecchino. He's still fine, just outclassed.
Sucrose is the budget Kazuha and stays relevant for that reason alone. F2P MVP candidate.
Fischl keeps appearing in Aggravate and Hyperbloom teams forever. C6 Fischl is C6 Fischl.
Varesa is a fun new Electro plunge specialist who fits into specific Natlan comps but isn't a generalist.
C Tier: Niche Use
Wanderer has cool plunging gameplay but loses to Mavuika in nearly every team.
Tighnari is still the best ranged Dendro DPS but Spread teams generally prefer melee carriers.
Lynette has some Anemo support utility at C6 but lacks the buffs of Kazuha or Sucrose.
Iansan is a Natlan Electro support who works in specific Mavuika comps but rarely shines elsewhere.
Kaveh is a fun Bloom enabler but Nahida basically makes him redundant.
D Tier: Outdated or Outclassed
Dehya still suffers from her launch design. The damage is low, the kit doesn't fit any reaction system cleanly, and even C6 doesn't fix her.
These characters aren't unplayable — Genshin is a single-player game and you can clear with anyone — but in the modern Spiral Abyss they're a tier behind the curve.
F2P-Friendly Best Picks
If you're not whaling, the cleanest investments right now are:
- Bennett (4-star) — strongest support in the game, period
- Xingqiu (4-star) — Hydro engine for vape teams
- Xiangling (4-star) — Pyro damage that scales forever
- Sucrose (4-star) — Kazuha but free
- Fischl (4-star) — Electro reaction backbone
- Furina (5-star) — when she reruns, save everything you've got
A National team built with Bennett/Xingqiu/Xiangling/Sucrose still clears the entire abyss, and none of those require a single limited banner pull. Genshin is a generous gacha for builders.
