You watched the trailer, you saved your Stellar Jades for six patches, you finally got E0S1 on the limited five-star you were aiming for — and then the next patch's banner makes them feel C-tier overnight. That's Honkai: Star Rail in 2026 in a nutshell. The power creep is real, the team requirements get more specific every patch, and figuring out who's actually carrying Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow has become its own meta-game.
I've been running the 3.x patch endgame across three accounts (one F2P, one moderate spender, one whale-adjacent) and the tier list looks completely different from what was meta even six months ago. Here's what's actually clearing the hardest content right now.
The State of Honkai: Star Rail in 2026
The Path of Remembrance shifted everything. Memosprite-based gameplay introduced a fundamentally new way to deal damage, and units like Aglaea, Castorice, and Tribbie have become some of the most-used limited characters in the game. The classic Hunt and Erudition archetypes haven't gone away, but the question of "what does this character bring that a Remembrance unit doesn't?" hangs over every banner.
Memory of Chaos in 3.x rewards burst windows, follow-up abuse, and break damage spikes. Apocalyptic Shadow continues to favor focused single-target nuking with toughness break setup. The new Pure Fiction variants reward DoT and AoE clearing power. Each endgame mode wants different teams, which means your roster needs at least two distinct compositions to consistently 36-star clear.
The big patch trend: HoYoverse is leaning into team-specific archetypes. Acheron Nihility teams, Firefly Break teams, Aglaea Remembrance teams, Phainon damage explosion comps. Mixed teams of "best characters across paths" are usually weaker than a focused single-archetype team. Picking a hypercarry and building around them is the move.
Here's how I'm ranking: assuming E0S1 and decent Light Cones plus relics. Where Eidolons matter for tier placement, that's noted but doesn't elevate above E0 monsters.
S+ Tier: The Meta Definers
These are the units that single-handedly define the strongest team archetypes. Pulling for these is a long-term investment that pays off across multiple patches.
Acheron is still the single most powerful damage carrier in the game when paired with her best supports. Her ult chains insane multipliers, her stacking mechanic is forgiving with good debuffers, and Pela/Silver Wolf/Sparkle keep her fully fed. She has fallen slightly because of competition, but at C0 she's still ahead of most carries.
Aglaea is the Remembrance hypercarry that defined a meta. Her Memosprite enables a completely new playstyle, her solo damage is enormous, and she pairs perfectly with Tribbie and Sunday. New accounts should pull for her if available.
Castorice is HoYoverse's most loved Remembrance unit so far. The HP-percentage damage scaling is unmatched, her Memosprite plays differently from Aglaea's, and she clears Pure Fiction better than almost anyone. Castorice + Tribbie + Hyacine teams have absurd ceiling.
The Herta is the AoE hypercarry that permanently changed how Pure Fiction works. Her Erudition kit hits like a truck, her synergy with Herta (yes, both Hertas) is hilarious, and she's a near-required pull for any serious Pure Fiction grinder.
Tribbie is the support that elevates an entire team's damage by absurd amounts. She's basically Furina from Genshin in HSR — works in nearly every comp, makes everything better, and has earth-shaking damage amp.
Sparkle is still the strongest Harmony Quantum DPS amplifier in the game. Her CRIT damage buff, action advance, and energy regen make her mandatory for Acheron, Jingliu, Seele, and several others.
S Tier: Powerhouse Mains and Top Supports
Robin is the universal damage support. Anyone benefits from her, every team wants her, and she's clean to build. Pull her on rerun if you skipped.
Ruan Mei is still the break support of choice for Firefly, Boothill, Rappa, and Fugue teams. Her speed boost, break efficiency, and damage amp keep her in S tier despite being released years ago.
Bronya got a quiet meta resurgence with Aglaea and Castorice teams. Her action advance plus damage buff is huge for hypercarry comps.
Huohuo remains a top-tier sustain. Her energy regen plus healing puts her ahead of every other Abundance unit besides Hyacine in burst-hungry comps.
Aventurine is the gold-standard Preservation pick for follow-up teams. His shielding plus his own damage make him the easiest "good sustain" pull.
Fu Xuan is the universal sustain who works in every team. She's slightly behind Aventurine in follow-up comps but ahead almost everywhere else.
Kafka still anchors DoT teams alongside Black Swan. Her ult damage and energy economy keep her relevant patch after patch.
Black Swan is the DoT scaling queen. Her Arcana stacks plus Kafka's nuke combo is one of the cleanest "unkillable burst comps" in the game.
Phainon is the new Path of Destruction explosion carrier with absurd burst damage windows. His ramp-up and pay-off mechanic is satisfying, and he clears MoC chambers fast.
Hyacine is the new top-tier Abundance unit who fits perfectly into Castorice and Aglaea teams. Her Remembrance synergy plus team buffs make her a sustain plus damage amp.
A Tier: Strong, Reliable, Slightly Conditional
These units carry teams but want specific lineups or content to truly shine.
Jingliu still blows up Memory of Chaos chambers in her dedicated Ice team but she's lost a step compared to newer carries.
Boothill is the Physical Break specialist. He works only with Ruan Mei + Bronya + sustain but in that team he absolutely cooks.
Firefly is Boothill's Fire counterpart. Same archetype, same team requirements, similar ceiling. The Break meta is alive and well.
Yunli is the universal Physical follow-up DPS for general use. She's slightly outclassed in pure top-end content but extremely accessible to build.
Feixiao is the wind follow-up Hunt DPS who clears Apocalyptic Shadow with ease. She wants Topaz and a follow-up support stack.
Lingsha is the Break-supportive sustain. She fits Firefly/Rappa teams perfectly and provides healing without losing damage.
Rappa is a strong Pure Fiction Break carrier. AoE damage that scales with break is exactly what that mode wants.
Mydei is the destruction self-sustaining carry that came out swinging in 3.x. He hits like a tank and survives like one too.
Sunday is the Imaginary Harmony support who pairs perfectly with summoner units like Aglaea and Jing Yuan.
Fugue is the Break-comp specialist support that pushes the archetype past Ruan Mei in some teams.
B Tier: Solid Picks That Need Help
Cipher is the Quantum trailblazer Hunt with strong personal damage but limited team flex.
Hysilens is a niche Imaginary DoT carrier — fun in Pure Fiction, mid in MoC.
Cerydra is a newer Harmony support with utility but lacks Tribbie or Sunday's universal applicability.
Anaxa is a serviceable Wind hypercarry that gets outshone by Feixiao in his preferred comps.
Saber is a new Lightning-path carrier with potential but very specific team requirements.
Topaz is still mandatory in Feixiao follow-up teams. Pull her if you have Feixiao.
Jade is the Quantum Pure Fiction farmer. Niche but strong in her lane.
C Tier: Niche Use
Argenti still demolishes Pure Fiction at E0 but loses to Herta now.
Imbibitor Lunae got powercrept by every Remembrance carry but still works in his single-target lane.
Seele is the original hypercarry. Her resurgence in dedicated Quantum teams is real but she's no longer top-tier in general content.
D Tier: Outdated or Outclassed
Standard banner DPS like Yanqing, Welt's older versions, and the original 4-star carries simply can't compete with current Remembrance and follow-up units in 3.x endgame. They're still playable in story content but won't 36-star MoC.
F2P-Friendly Best Picks
If you're not whaling, focus on these accessible 4-stars and standard banner targets:
- March 7th (Hunt) — F2P MVP follow-up DPS for Feixiao teams
- Pela — best Acheron debuffer in the game, free to obtain
- Tingyun — universal energy battery and Harmony support
- Asta — speed support that enables Break teams cheaply
- Gallagher — best F2P Break sustain, full stop
- Trailblazer (Harmony Imaginary) — absurdly strong in Break teams
A Firefly + Trailblazer + Ruan Mei + Gallagher team is the cleanest "you only need one limited unit" build in the game. Star Rail is genuinely friendly to F2P players who pick a single archetype and commit.
