Best Anime of 2024-2025 Tier List: From Hidden Gems to Absolute Masterpieces

I binged The Dangers in My Heart Season 2 in one sitting at 3 AM and immediately rewatched the entire series. I couldn't help myself. The character development was so perfect, the romance so beautifully paced, that I needed to experience it again immediately.

That's the kind of year 2024 was for anime. 2024 was a brilliant year for anime with every season delivering at least a couple of fantastic series covering a wide spectrum of genres including romance, action, isekai, comedy, sci-fi, and drama. And 2025 continues that momentum with standout sequels and surprising newcomers.

Let me rank the anime that actually mattered across these two incredible years – the shows you'll remember long after the final episode.

S-Tier: The Absolute Masterpieces

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

This is what happens when you give a fantasy series time to breathe and explore consequences. Frieren received an IMDB rating of 8.9 and was described as "an absolute triumph in storytelling, execution, and emotional resonance."

The premise is deceptively simple: an elf mage retraces her journey with the hero's party after his death, finally understanding what their friendship meant. But the execution is extraordinary. The storytelling is so clever that the basic journey narrative subtly becomes a unique psychological and emotional introspection, creating a poignant, time-reversed exploration of connection between an immortal mage and a mortal hero.

What devastated me? The quiet moments. Frieren discovering she barely knew her closest friend. The realization that her perception of time robbed her of appreciating fleeting connections. The show doesn't rush emotional beats – it lets them land with full weight.

The fight scenes are incredibly animated and smooth with gorgeous environments and compelling characters. But it's the restraint that makes Frieren special. It's mature fantasy that trusts viewers to appreciate subtlety.

Solo Leveling may have won Anime of the Year, but many believe Frieren deserved it more. I'm in that camp. This is S-tier worldbuilding and character work.

The Dangers in My Heart (Season 2)

The 2024 Anime of the Year poll pulled in 51,698 voters, with The Dangers in My Heart Season 2 claiming first place, narrowly beating Frieren by just 0.18%. That's how tight the competition was.

This romance anime does everything right. The character development is paced so perfectly with the protagonist's growth feeling earned and natural. The romance moves along at a great pace throughout the show and doesn't slow down once, which is rare in romance anime that often stall in "will-they-won't-they" purgatory.

What makes it S-tier? The authenticity. Middle school relationships are usually portrayed as comedic or overly dramatic. The Dangers in My Heart treats them with respect while acknowledging the awkwardness. The main character's internal monologue is simultaneously cringey and relatable. We've all been that insecure teenager.

One reviewer called it a serious contender for top anime romance ever, describing it as "a phenomenal work, in many ways redefining what a teen romance series is." I don't disagree. This is romance writing at its finest.

DanDaDan

DanDaDan is considered not only the best anime of the 2024 fall season but also 2024 in general. It won the Best Animation Award for 2024, beating out heavy hitters like Jujutsu Kaisen.

The anime is so unhinged and unapologetically energetic, so unpredictable and brilliantly absurd that it never lets viewers break out of its trance. The premise – aliens and ghosts fighting over the protagonists – sounds ridiculous. It is ridiculous. And it's absolutely brilliant.

What makes DanDaDan a future powerhouse is the core relationship between leads Momo and Okkarun. Their chemistry carries the show even during absurd supernatural battles. The series offers an incredibly infectious fresh take on demons, aliens, and supernatural powers.

Episode 7's story about Acrobatic Silky became iconic for good reason. The show shifts from manic energy to genuine emotional depth seamlessly. I cried during a show about aliens stealing someone's genitals. That's impressive tonal control.

While primarily an action rom-com, it doesn't shy away from serious moments. The animation quality is consistently stunning. The energy is relentless. DanDaDan is everything I want from modern anime.

A-Tier: Excellent Series That Slightly Missed Perfection

Solo Leveling

Solo Leveling won Anime of the Year in 2024 and was "the buzziest show of the year, riding the hype train of a beloved webtoon." It turned heads with explosive visuals and fast-paced battles, bringing Sung Jinwoo's ascension to godhood to life with slick direction and blockbuster-style fight choreography.

The animation is genuinely incredible. The action sequences rival movie-quality production. Jinwoo's progression from weakest hunter to overwhelming powerhouse is satisfying power fantasy done right.

So why A-tier instead of S-tier? The narrative pacing was uneven, and much of the season was spent on repetitive dungeon crawls with little introspection, feeling "like a flashy appetizer rather than a full-course meal."

Solo Leveling excels at spectacle but lacks the emotional depth of true S-tier shows. It's style over substance – but when the style is this good, that's not necessarily a problem. Just don't expect Frieren-level character work.

Delicious in Dungeon

Dungeon Meshi won the prestigious Star Crossed Anime of the Year award, and for good reason. The series puts a new spin on the fantasy genre by turning dungeon crawling into a culinary adventure.

The premise is simple: adventurers need to eat while exploring a dungeon, so they cook the monsters they defeat. What could've been a one-note gimmick becomes something special through character dynamics and world-building.

The humor is elevated by the endearing and quirky cast, whose distinct personalities create constant comedic gold. But the show never shies away from more emotionally deep flashbacks and character writing, turning episodes into multidimensional experiences.

Delicious in Dungeon focuses on bonds built through adventure and warm meals, giving the anime a wonderfully wholesome atmosphere. It's comfort food as an anime – literally and figuratively.

My reservation keeping it from S-tier? The episodic structure occasionally stalls narrative momentum. Some episodes are filler-esque cooking segments. But when the main plot kicks in, it delivers.

Kaiju No. 8

This year's biggest shounen anime became a Spring 2024 hit after an outstanding debut episode full of amazingly animated action, chuckle-inducing comedy, and an underdog story that older audiences can relate to.

What sets Kaiju No. 8 apart? For a shonen property, the series features a refreshingly older protagonist, with Kafka well into his thirties. Seeing an adult navigate shonen tropes adds interesting perspective. He's not a teenager discovering powers – he's a man getting a second chance at dreams he'd abandoned.

The action is quite spectacular, benefiting from great animation and consistently fun monster designs. The kaiju battles feel weighty and destructive. The military organization aspect adds strategic depth to fights.

However, some critics felt it was just another generic shonen story. The hype exacerbated issues with the source material. The plotting is predictable. Character deaths lack impact. It's extremely well-executed shonen, but still following familiar patterns.

B-Tier: Good Shows with Notable Flaws

Blue Box

Blue Box was among some of the year's best cozy watches, offering a sports romance that hits the right emotional beats without breaking new ground.

The animation during badminton matches is solid. The romance develops naturally without excessive drama. The characters are likable. It's... nice. And that's the problem.

Blue Box doesn't take risks. It's a competently executed sports romance that never surprises. If you want comfort viewing, it delivers. If you want something memorable, look elsewhere.

My Hero Academia (Final Season)

MHA's final season is complicated to rank. The manga's ending was divisive, and the anime faithfully adapts material many fans found disappointing.

The animation quality remains high. The voice acting is excellent. The emotional beats still land when characters you've followed for years face their ultimate challenges.

But narrative choices that frustrated manga readers remain intact. Plot threads feel rushed. Character arcs resolve unsatisfyingly. It's a technically well-made adaptation of flawed source material.

For fans invested in the series, it's worth watching for closure. For everyone else, the peak of MHA was seasons past.

What Made 2024-2025 Special for Anime

These years proved anime's range has never been wider. We got:

Mature fantasy that respects intelligence - Frieren showed you don't need constant action to create compelling fantasy. Thoughtful pacing and emotional depth work.

Romance done right - The Dangers in My Heart proved teen romance can be authentic without being cringey or overly dramatic.

Innovative genre blends - DanDaDan merged supernatural action, romance, and comedy in ways that shouldn't work but absolutely do.

Wholesome creativity - Delicious in Dungeon turned "cooking monsters" into heartfelt character exploration.

Spectacular adaptation - Solo Leveling proved manhwa can translate beautifully to anime with proper production values.

The variety is staggering. Every genre had standout entries. Whether you wanted action, romance, comedy, drama, or weird experimental stuff, 2024-2025 delivered.

The Animation Quality Revolution

Dan Da Dan emerged victorious in the Best Animation category, with Frieren: Beyond Journey's End right behind. The bar for animation quality has never been higher.

Even mid-tier productions look better than top-tier shows from a decade ago. Studios are investing in talent and technology. Viewers expect movie-quality animation in TV series, and increasingly, that's what we're getting.

Solo Leveling's fight choreography. DanDaDan's kinetic action sequences. Frieren's gorgeous landscapes. These aren't exceptions – they're becoming the standard.

The Debate That Defined 2024

Solo Leveling got the big win at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, but many think Frieren deserved it more. This debate encapsulates different philosophies about what makes anime great.

Solo Leveling represents spectacle, hype, and pure entertainment. It's flashy, exciting, and immediately gratifying. Frieren represents depth, maturity, and emotional resonance. It's thoughtful, subtle, and rewards patience.

Both approaches are valid. Both produced excellent anime. The "right" winner depends on what you value more: immediate excitement or lasting impact.

I prefer Frieren. But I understand why Solo Leveling won. Popularity contests favor buzziest shows, not necessarily best ones.

Making Your Choice

Don't try watching everything. These years produced too much quality content. Instead, pick based on what you're craving:

Want emotional depth? Frieren or The Dangers in My Heart
Want spectacular action? Solo Leveling or DanDaDan
Want wholesome vibes? Delicious in Dungeon
Want chaotic energy? DanDaDan (it fits multiple categories)
Want shonen with older protagonist? Kaiju No. 8

Every S-tier and A-tier show is worth your time. Even B-tier shows have merit if they match your preferences.

Final Thoughts

2024-2025 will be remembered as exceptional years for anime. The sheer quality across genres, the animation improvements, the willingness to experiment – it all came together.

Kaiju No. 8 and Dan Da Dan will become fan favorites in no time. Frieren already achieved modern classic status. The Dangers in My Heart redefined romance anime expectations. Solo Leveling proved manhwa adaptations can succeed at the highest level.

I started more anime in 2024-2025 than I finished, simply because there was too much good content. That's a problem I'm happy to have. Quality beats quantity, but when we're getting both? That's a golden age.

The hard part isn't finding something good to watch. It's deciding which of the many excellent options deserves your limited time. What a wonderful problem to have.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to rewatch The Dangers in My Heart for the third time. That romance is just too perfect.
